Why We Exist

The World Health Organization estimates that over 70 million people need a wheelchair worldwide, yet only 5-15% have access to one. Without a wheelchair, a disabled child or teen may only leave their home if held or carried.

The Challenge & Our Solution

A mother in Peru carries her disabled son in a sling on her back.

When a child can't walk, a wheelchair means freedom — but only if it is appropriate for their unique needs, well-fitted, and provided in a context where repairs and replacements are available when necessary. Because kids outgrow wheelchairs, just like shoes! But appropriate wheelchairs can be almost impossible to access for those who need them in Peru.

Since 2007 Eleanore’s Project has worked in partnership with Yancana Huasy - a wrap-around disability program located in San Juan de Lurigancho, a district of Lima, Peru. We provide wheelchairs and other rehabilitation equipment, together with mentoring of Yancana Huasy occupational and physical therapists. Each year we travel to Peru to work alongside them, fitting wheelchairs and providing other support so they can carry the work on during the rest of the year.

Together we have created a program that provides wheelchair services according to guidelines established by the World Health Organization and goes beyond, because the foundation of the work includes 24-hour posture care management to protect children’s bodies and increase their chances of growing straight and strong. Every child who receives a wheelchair through Eleanore’s Project and Yancana Huasy gets more than just a piece of equipment. Their family receives training in how to support their posture in and out of the wheelchair, which can make a life-changing difference!

You can support our work ensuring teens and children in Peru can have access to wheelchairs that safely fit them. Make a gift today.
